In the operating room (OR), providing a clean environment for surgical patients is one of the perioperative nurse’s primary responsibilities.  All surgical patients are considered potentially infected with bloodborne pathogens so all surgical procedures are considered contaminated, requiring implementation of effective cleaning protocols.  But how do we really know that these cleaning practices are effective?  How do we define and measure “clean” in the OR?   This educational activity has been designed for perioperative nurses involved in the daily care of surgical patients to provide an overview of applicable infection control principles and protocols.  Daily cleaning practices in the operating room and some of the standards, recommended practices and competencies currently used to define, measure and monitor “clean” in the OR will be included.
